Synopsis

Arie Kornet hates school holidays on his family’s barge, RIVAL, which is home to Arie, his two sisters, his father, and his deaf mother. That is, until an unexpected brush with Russian secret agents...

Author's Biography

Valerie Poore was born in London, England, and after completing her BA degree, she worked for a furniture restoration company until the birth of her first daughter. She lived a life of ‘self-sufficiency’ before going to South Africa in 1981 with her family. The Skipper’s Child was influenced by her Dutch partner’s growing up on a commercial barge. Although the people, events and anecdotes are founded in fact, the story is fictional.

A wee gem of a book.
An outstanding Author who writes not only from experience but from the heart too.
Great exciting story for young and old and very easy to read. Living in Holland I can imagine life on a barge travelling between Holland, Belgium and France.
Excellent adventure story. Set in commercial boating world. Makes a an interesting setting for this gripping tale. Transports the reader to the time and place where this story took place.
A brilliant story and so much fun to read. It gives such a great and heart warming insight into life on the water. You have to read this book.
A wonderful read for old and young.
In the finest watery tradition of such classics as "Swallows and Amazons" and with the unfolding suspense of "Emil and the Detectives", but transplanted in history and place to a Dutch Barge, this is a truly wonderful book. The characters are beautifully drawn, and the mystery skilfully crafted to appeal to mature child readers and adults alike. A tale that deserves its place in any reader's hands.
This is a truly delightful book. I read it to my grandson and granddaughter and I was as absorbed in the story as they were. In a world where so much influences our children in negative ways, it is a pleasure to find a book that is both safe for children, adventurous, and entertaining. It reminds me of the books from my childhood. Exciting and positive in its message.
A beautifully written book which is so interesting in the detail and setting and a pulse racing adventure, I couldn't put it down!
An enchanting story, I just wish my children were still young enough for me to read to them.I thought the story was completely engrossing- the family's adventures were quite tense- making, and the descriptions of life on the water were captivating. A thoroughly good read, and I look forward to further adventures?
This is a charming and heart-warming tale that not only sends the reader on a rolicking adventure but also teaches them about life on the water as it has been in the Netherlands for centuries. This book thoroughly deserves to win, in my opinion!
Brilliant book, well written and very descriptive. A joy to read.
I loved this book, not only because I love reading historical fiction to my students, but because I have been on a barge and really enjoyed reading about what life was like growing up on one. I also thought the suspense and thriller elements of this novel made it a great page-turner for children and adults alike. Highly recommended!
I am a skipper's child myself so....I love the fact there is a book now about that...the first one as far as I know !!! I just loved it !!!
Brilliant story, loved it - votes well deserved.
