Synopsis

Based on a true story, the once-wealthy Chance family are swindled out of their Whitewall Estate in the mid-1700s and the truth isn’t discovered for nearly 90 years. In 1850 Maria Chance promises her dying father to put this injustice to rights, and is thereafter plunged into some extraordinarily dangerous and terrifying situations in mid-Victorian Britain.

Author's Biography

The author was born in Stockport in 1947, after leaving school was employed in widely differing capacities including being a police constable and sailing around the world in the Merchant Navy. In the 1980s he started his own businesses, and in 2001 he became a professional yachtmaster, taking disabled people on sailing.

Loved it and couldn't put it down
A riveting read. I loved the mixture of Victorian and modern day themes. Definitely one to keep you up long into the night
The author cleverly interleaves a modern day plot with a Victorian counterpart based on real events in his own family history. Makes for compelling reading and maintains suspense until the very end.

A tale that highlights the oppression of women, the poor and poor women in particular. Nothing much changes. Cries out for a sequel.

I Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, it kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the way the history was combined with the now of this book. The story was interesting and the writing was well done for a first book. I hope to read the sequal and that it is as good as the first if not better.
